A Snickersville Turnpike crossroads village whose general store still hands out the mail.
History
Philomont sits at the crossing of the Snickersville Turnpike and JEB Stuart Road, about halfway along the turnpike’s 15 miles between Aldie and Bluemont. Its oldest house dates to the late 1700s, but the village really took off in the 1830s and 1840s, after the turnpike and the nearby Hibbs Bridge (completed 1829) brought steady traffic. Tanners, blacksmiths, carpenters and doctors set up shop, often working from their own homes.
The name blends Greek and French roots into something like beloved mountain. Quakers were among those who established the village, and during the Civil War soldiers from both armies passed through regularly, with only small skirmishes nearby. A second building boom followed repairs to the turnpike in the 1870s and 1880s.
The general store, which traces its start to 1843, remains the social center, and residents still collect their mail there. A former 1919 schoolhouse now serves as the community center, Roszell Chapel still holds services, and horse shows have been held on the village grounds since 1957. In 2023 the village was listed on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register.
